21 Questions

Tressa sat at the vanity touching up her makeup while Indie surfed the television channels on the cable. “Today is the day we start to prepare for the big day, huh?” He tried to sound casual, but Tressa could tell he was a little nervous about the marriage counseling.

“Don’t tell me you’re getting cold feet,” she teased, sneaking a peek at Indie’s reflection in the mirror as he abused the remote. “The last thing I need while standing at the altar is a runaway husband.”

Indie turned his focus from the television toward her, but Tressa acted as if she didn’t notice and continued to apply her eye shadow. “I never ran from anything in my life, babe.” Her comment must’ve touched a nerve. “And I would stand in front of a firing squad before I’d ever abandon you.”

Tressa thought his comment was sweet, but the best part about it was that she knew Indie was being honest and not just saying what he thought she wanted to hear. Honesty and loyalty were among his greatest qualities. But that didn’t mean she was going to let him off easy. “I hope you’re not comparing our wedding day to standing in front of a firing squad,” she poked at him in fun.

In the mirror, she could see him coming her way. He kissed her on the back of her neck.

“Of course not,” he whispered, gracing her with another kiss. “Don’t be so hard on me.”

She was about to torture him a little more when someone rang the doorbell.

“That’s Pastor Jacobs,” Tressa said, looking at the clock on the night table. “He’s right on time.”

Tressa led the pastor to the great room, which was one of Tressa’s favorite rooms in their 5500-square-foot home. The vaulted ceiling and the sparkling chandelier gave the room an elegant veneer but Tressa went out of the way to make sure the space was also comfortable. She wanted it to feel welcoming, not stuffy. The goal was accomplished.

In preparation for today, Pastor Jacobs had given each of them a questionnaire to fill out. He had the papers in his hands now and was reading over them.

“You guys have been engaged for quite some time,” he said, placing the notes in his lap.

“Eight years,” Indie confirmed.

The pastor asked, “Do you mind telling me why you waited so long?”

Tressa and Indie looked at each other, unsure of whom the pastor had posed the question to. “I don’t care who answers,” Pastor Jacobs said.

“Well”—Tressa stepped up to the plate to Indie’s relief—“we never really thought it was the right time.”

Pastor Jacobs nodded. “Then why do you think now is the right time? And whose idea was it to finally make it happen?”

Indie assisted his wife-to-be with this one. “We both decided together,” he said. “To be honest, it wasn’t really a decision. It was more like a feeling, you know. It felt right to do it now.”

Pastor Jacobs seemed to like this response, Tressa noticed. “Do you have any children, Indie?” The pastor wasn’t wasting a lot of time getting to the good parts.
